Year 6 McMahon Art Lesson with Mrs Harrigan

26th Feb 2016

On 25th February 2016 Mrs Harrigan came into our class to do an art lesson. First she told us about Piet Mondrian the artist our pictures would be inspired by. He was born in Holland. Mondrian and his friend Theo invented an art style called grid, it consists of lots of straight lines. Apparently Theo once put curved lines in his picture and Piet never spoke to him again.

We were given black wax crayons to draw the lines which were the main part of our picture. We were also given water colours. Some tables had different colours so everyone’s pictures were unique.

We had to draw vertical and horizontal lines. Then we drew vertical lines. After that we drew hearts, flowers, circles or ovals on top of all the lines. We also drew little dashes everywhere on the picture except in the hearts, flowers, circles or ovals.

Next came the fun part we got to paint our pictures. We weren’t allowed to put two of the same colour beside each other. We were told it was better not to use too many colours this turned out to be harder than it sounded because there were so many different little shapes.

At the end of the lesson Miss Joyce took pictures of everyone with their paintings. The paintings looked amazing. I don’t know about the others but I thought the art lesson was really fun and abstract is my favourite style.
