P2 Cunningham Ice Experiment

26th Jan 2018

Today was a busy Friday in P2.

As well as doing PE, learning a penguin song in music and writing a report about polar bears during independent writing time we became scientists!

Our mission was to see if warm water or cold water melts ice the quickest.

We filled two gloves full of water and put them in the freezer to freeze.

We then placed each ice hand into a tray of cold water and warm water. We had to make sure we had the same amount of water in each tray, the same amount of water in each glove and the same length of time kept in the freezer to make sure it was a fair test. As predicted, the ice hand in the warm water tray melted away first.

We then decided to see what result adding salt to ice had. We know that on icy days salt is added to the roads to make them less slippy. Why is this?

Patrick poured salt onto each ice hand. We predicted, investigated and evaluated. 23 of us predicted that the ice hand would melt when salt was added. 6 of us predicted that the salt would not make the ice hand melt. Were our predictions correct? Try this experiment out at home. You could even use food colouring to change the ice different colours.

We now know that salt is added to slippy roads to make the ice melt away so they are safe for us to drive on.
