P1 Wynne Numeracy
15th Dec 2017
We have been doing lots of practical numeracy work in Primary 1 Wynne.
- We have been helping to wrap Santa’s presents in his workshop. Once we wrapped them, we decided to weigh them. Before we put them on the scales, we guessed by holding them, which one would be heavier and which would be lighter. When we put them on the scales, one present fell down to the bottom and one present went up to the top. We know that the present that falls to the bottom of the scales is heavier and the present that floats up, does so because it is lighter. We know that if the presents stay in the same place on the scales and the arrows point to each other, they are about the same weight. At first we thought that big things were heavy and little things were light, but when we weighed some small presents they were very heavy and some of the big presents were very light. We discovered that it depended what they were made of, as some things were heavier than others!! We are learning lots!
- We have also been explored 3D shapes, and making models. We have built rockets and playgrounds and even Santa's workshop in the North Pole! We are learning the names of some 3D shapes, such as cone, cylinder, cube, cuboid and sphere. We will be looking around our classroom to see if we can see any of these shapes. Some of us recognised a cone from eating ice-cream from a cone and we recognised a sphere as a football or basketball. I wonder if you can find any of these 3D shapes in your home.
- We have also been learning about money, using 1p coins. We had the chance to be a customer and a shopkeeper with our partner. The shopkeeper had to ask the customer for the right amount of money before they bought any toys and objects.
- We love playing Number Bingo, as we are getting so good at recognising numerals and counting sets of different objects. We play this lots on our whiteboards in class. Maybe you could show your adult how to play number bingo at home!!
We have been going Numeracy crazy in P1 and are really enjoying all the practical, hands-on learning!!
