P6 Phetpraphai's Viking Workshop Trip

20th Oct 2017

On Friday 20th P6 Phetpraphai went to the Viking workshop to learn more about the Vikings and have fun! It was staged in the Parish Hall and there were 9 challenges ready for us to do. The challenges were: dressing up, household jobs, weaving, longhouse making, trip trap troll, Viking runes, the weapons talk, the chainmail relay and the artefact hunt.

Trip trap troll was an old Viking game requiring you moving 2 counters to trap your opponent’s counters. In the household jobs everyone learnt how to make flour and create a small flame using flint and stone. The dressing up section was a long table with many Viking clothes, hats, wigs and helmets. There were a variety of different clothes including a funny wig with long hair. For the weapons talk Magnus told us about all the different weapons Vikings used in battle or at home. We learnt that the spear was used for long distance and it was not ideal for close combat.

After we had lunch our class went to do sword defence with Magnus. We learnt the 5 blocks. We had a mini competition and our classmate Niamh M won. Finally, we had spear-making with Rita. We were given fish shaped card to tape up at the side and stick a cardboard pole and taped it up in a spiral fashion. We came home with bracelets and our very own spears. Everyone really enjoyed this workshop and recommend it for all future P6s. We really liked this experience and hope there are more trips like this in the future.
